Kinetic Facade
Light-Responsive Kinetic System | A Parametric Design for Daylighting
This project explores a light-responsive kinetic façade system designed through Rhino and Grasshopper. By using parametric modeling, the system transforms a static façade into a dynamic surface that responds to solar exposure and optimizes interior daylight performance.
The design consists of triangular modular units that fold or unfold based on external lighting conditions. Each panel is programmed to open or close depending on the desired shading level: fully open for maximum light, semi-open for moderated glare, and fully closed to block direct sun. These states are driven by environmental data and controlled through Grasshopper definitions.
The system integrates into a full façade grid and is structurally supported via a sub-frame attached to the building envelope. Sectional diagrams show its spatial relationship to interior workspaces and illustrate how it balances light penetration with visual comfort. This prototype reflects a responsive, sustainable, and visually expressive approach to environmental design.
