Air Quality Sensor – Workshop 2

VOC & eCO₂ Sensing with Adafruit SGP30 + LCD Display

This workshop, held as part of my Artist and Makers in Residence at the Learning Factory, focused on building a real-time indoor air quality monitor using the Adafruit SGP30 sensor and a 20x4 I²C LCD display. The workshop explored environmental sensing fundamentals, circuit prototyping, and live data visualization of VOC and eCO₂ readings.

Students assembled the system step-by-step, learned how to program the Arduino for air quality sensing, and implemented simple alerts to indicate unhealthy air levels. The design emphasized accessibility, cost-effectiveness, and clarity of output, encouraging participants to understand how environmental data can be collected, processed, and visualized in real-world applications.

The workshop builds on Workshop 1 and aims to inspire practical, creative applications of air quality sensing in architecture, product design, and smart systems development.
